Mako sharks - Fast hunters of the oceans

Mako sharks - Fast hunters of the oceans Mako sharks, also known as makos, are fascinating predatory fish that are among the fastest and most manoeuvrable sharks in the world. There are two species: the shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) and the rarer longfin mako (Isurus paucus). These impressive hunters can be found in all warm and temperate seas around the world.

Mako sharks are characterised by their streamlined body shape, which is perfectly adapted to their way of life. They reach a length of two to four metres and can weigh up to 590 kg. Their skin is covered with special, tooth-like scales that enable them to move smoothly through the water and change direction at lightning speed.

The speed of the Mako shark is particularly remarkable. The shortfin mako is considered the fastest shark in the world and can reach top speeds of over 70 kilometres per hour. This speed, coupled with their manoeuvrability, makes them extremely effective hunters.

Mako sharks are partially warm-blooded, which gives them an advantage when hunting in colder waters. They feed mainly on fish and squid and play an important role in the marine ecosystem.

Interestingly, Mako sharks are closely related to the Great White Shark. Molecular biological studies indicate that the genera Isurus (mako sharks) and Carcharodon (white sharks) separated from each other in the Palaeocene or Eocene. In this context, it is worth mentioning the extinct Cosmopolitodus hastalis, a prehistoric shark that is considered a possible ancestor or close relative of the modern great white shark. Although not directly related to the mako sharks, Cosmopolitodus hastalis shares some similar characteristics in terms of size and hunting behaviour.
