1.3 cm long dark tooth of the Triceratops

The 1.3 cm long dark fossilised tooth of Triceratops from the Hell Creek Formation in South Dakota/USA is in a good state of preservation. The Triceratops (three-horned face) from the Ceratopidae family is one of the best-known herbivorous dinosaurs. It is characterised by its massive neck shield and its two long horns above the eyes and the smaller nasal horn. The Triceratops reached a length of up to 9 metres and a shoulder height of 3.5 metres. It reached a weight of up to 12 tonnes. Its sharp-edged beak was ideal for plucking grasses. The teeth were arranged in rows and were located at the back of the jaw. They were replaced by subsequent teeth as they wore down.
