6.6 cm large tooth of Otodus sokolovi

The 6.6 cm tooth of Otodus sokolovi is in very good condition. The enamel is reddish in colour with white patterns. The serration is perfectly preserved and sharp, and the two typical lateral teeth are clearly visible and pointed. The bourelette is narrow and darker. The tooth root has slight cracks, but this does not affect its stability. The root is relatively wide and very prominent. Otodus sokolovi is considered an important transitional form between the species Otodus auriculatus and Otodus angustidens in the evolutionary line of ‘megatooth’ sharks, which also includes the famous megalodon. O. sokolovi is characterised by large teeth with lateral serrations and distinctive lateral cusps, which distinguishes it from related species. Fossils of this shark are found mainly in the vicinity of Dakhla in Western Sahara (Morocco).
