4.1 cm tooth of Carcharocles megalodon from the phosphate mines of Bone Valley

The tooth of the young Megalodon shows overall a very bright and beautiful coloration. The light gray bourlette and root are completely preserved and the finely toothed crown shimmers in various shades of blue, gray and white depending on the incidence of light.

The region known as the Bone Valley Formation is located in Polk County in central Florida in the United States. Numerous phosphate mines have been located here for many years, which are therefore not accessible to the public. The fossil findings in this region, especially the shark teeth , captivate by their special and colorful coloring. The fossilization and absorption of minerals also caused the mostly white coloration of the tooth roots and the bourlette. The teeth of Carcharocles Megalodon found here are often not very large, which suggests in expert circles that this region is one of the nurseries of the largest shark of all time.
