4.7 cm light tooth from Carcharodontosaurus
4.7 cm light tooth from Carcharodontosaurus
The 4.7 cm tooth of Carcharodontosaurus saharicus is slightly wider. On one side, the light beige enamel is still well preserved with visible grain. On the other side, the enamel has flaked off, revealing the white interior of the tooth. In places, the tooth structure is still visible and palpable. The tooth has a small repair on the root, which is clearly visible in the pictures. Carcharodontosaurus saharicus was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs that ever lived on Earth. The name means “shark-toothed lizard” and refers to the similarity of the teeth to those of the great white shark, after which the genus was named. The Carcharodontosaurus reached a length of up to 13.7 meters and an estimated weight of about 6 tons. Its skull was exceptionally large at around 1.6 meters and bore about 60 long, sharp, serrated teeth that were suitable for tearing apart prey.
