The 5.0 cm tooth of Carcharocles chubutensis has a grey-blue coloured enamel and a well-preserved black bourelette. The serration is still clearly recognisable, as are the two typical lateral cusps. Carcharocles chubutensis is considered the direct ancestor of the megalodon and was somewhat smaller, measuring up to 12 metres in length.
