The genus of Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo) has existed for 50 million years. Scientists currently distinguish between 6 different species.
The Tiger shark ( Galeocerdo cuvier ) , which still exists today, has been around since the Middle Miocene, about 23.03 million years ago. Most of all Tiger sharks are known about the Galeocerdo cuvier .
It belongs to the genus of requiem sharks and, at up to 7.5 metres, is one of the larger known shark species. The Tiger shark occurs worldwide in tropical, subtropical and warmer waters.

Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are impressive predators of the oceans, known for their characteristic appearance and fascinating behaviour. These sharks have a robust body and a broad head, with a colouring that varies from grey-brown to greenish. Young Tiger sharks have distinct dark horizontal stripes or spots that often fade with age.

Tiger sharks are extremely adaptable and opportunistic hunters. Their prey spectrum is exceptionally broad and includes other sharks, fish, sea turtles, birds and even unusual objects such as tin signs or tyres. This versatility in their diet makes them one of the most adaptable predators in the ocean.

The teeth of the Tiger shark are so-called revolver teeth and consist of 18 - 22 rows. In contrast to other sharks, the teeth of the upper and lower jaw are very similar. The shape of the teeth is reminiscent of a cockscomb and have a very strong serration. This enables the apex predator to crack even turtle shells. The Tiger shark has the broadest food spectrum of all shark species, such as smaller conspecifics, all bony fish, turtles and also large seabirds.

The hunting behaviour of Tiger sharks is remarkable. They use various strategies, including patient waiting and sudden acceleration, to surprise their prey. Their excellent sensory abilities, especially their keen sense of smell and ability to recognise electric fields, make them effective hunters.

Tiger sharks are usually solitary animals that can travel long distances. They are active at dusk or at night and often move to very shallow waters in the evening and at night, while retreating to deeper regions during the day. Their curiosity and occasional aggression make them a challenge for divers and fishermen.

Although Tiger sharks are considered dangerous to humans, attacks are relatively rare. As with all shark accidents, the risk of being bitten by a Tiger shark is low. It is important to emphasise that sharks, including Tiger sharks, play an important role in the marine ecosystem and are often more feared than understood.
