The so-called cow shark belongs to the Hexanchiformes group, which groups together the most primitive shark species, of which 7 species still live today. The Weltonia ancistrodon lived about millions of years ago and probably closely resembled today's species. Hexanchiform sharks have only one dorsal fin, either six or seven gill slits and no nictitating membrane in the eyes. Their body length as adults ranges from 1.4 m to over 5.5 m in today's species.
